Music and Music Teaching: Perception by Now and Then
Friday, July 30th, 2010
Music nowadays seems to be one of the most popular hobbies that the youngsters are indulging in. For some, it may be just a pure form of entertainment or a way of living, whereas for the others, it can be a serious escape from their stressful lives. They use music as a medium of conveying their suppressed emotions. Not too surprisingly, it makes them really into music.
Because of the different influences that the youth are exposed into, they are easily acquiring the curiosity of engaging into learning music. It may not exactly be reading musical notes and the other formal stuff regarding such, but at least, something highly relevant to it like playing musical instruments or simply singing.
Before, people, specially the youth, viewed Music, a subject in their primary and secondary schooling, as a conservative and boring one. With lots of different bits and pieces that should be memorized and understood without knowing their use and purpose, music then had been a vague and dull form of school activity to do.
Perhaps, the reason is that they relate music with “church” where they usually hear the hymns and praises when they were kids. They thought music should be solemnly expressed all the time.
As these young people aged up, they began to realize how interesting music could be far from what they used to perceive. From all the different genres and styles, they found a match. I am truly glad to say that finally, they are now fascinated with music learning as well as music teaching.
Many are aware that music centers began to spring suddenly nowadays. People look for formal lessons and their aim is, of course, to learn music. They also want to develop the talents they believe they are blessed with.
Music teaching is definitely an issue when talking about learning music. Aside from being considered as something pretty difficult and tedious, many believe that it requires lots of effort, patience, and passion in doing so.
However, with the kinds of trends, technology and methods that we have right now, music teaching has become less complicated. Indeed, different resources and tools are made readily available to be an aid to anyone who has interests in music teaching. It may be through various means like seeking the help and guidance of music enthusiasts and experts, enrolling in various learning centers, reading music-related books, availing advanced music gadgets, or browsing the web.
Music teaching has been both the career and passion of many musically inclined individuals around the globe. Thus, schools of music spring forth worldwide, paving the way for music enthusiasts for greater opportunities globally. That is how powerful music and music teaching can be.

Books are Silent Mentors
Thursday, July 29th, 2010
Books are not the only source of knowledge but are reservoirs of intelligence. You can get acquainted with and become like brilliant authors/inventors/doctors/teachers by tapping the intelligence of famous authors for improving the world.
Ebooks: Just about any book is available as an e-book version, the latest being a contribution by a prime dignity: ‘ The Audacity of Hope’, by Barack Obama. E-books are nothing but virtual books that can be stored on the Internet that is available in urban and rural areas through Internet cafes at cheap rates. Online storage is available on websites and is the cheapest way of purchasing the most sought after book. You can even become an online reader member by paying a lifetime or onetime membership fee. Newspapers too are available for downloads for archiving information.
Audio magazines: Audio books are best for learning languages especially, for the disabled and most importantly, for learning Braille. There are choices of subjects in audio magazines, such as the dramatized version of Philip Pullmans classic Northern Lights is only children’s book on the top ten audio book list. Books on science and fiction can be a great hit with kids, as they love stories of the moon
Books: Books are used for referencing information and become links for posterity. They are useful because many a time, they have remained as the only source of information for scientists to conduct research and amend information on old discoveries, such as clinical research on cancer patients or the latest disease of our era. Cancer is one of the most degenerative and dreadful terminal illnesses where death is certain and not all can afford costly treatment leading suicides and loss of human lives say, especially, in the case of a scientist where it is a loss for the entire mankind for all times! Therefore, every generation needs to contribute towards finding a cure for cancer and the valuable information needs to be carefully, stored as magazines/e-books/audio books. A saying goes, ‘Beware of the person who reads only one book’, meaning he has gained mastery over that subject. His inputs too need to be recorded for posterity.
Magazines: The best selling magazines like: Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, AARP The Magazine are available for online purchase with good bargains.
Above all, it is a proven fact that the most successful and creative people are those who had childhood that were most memorable because bedtime story books were read to them in the best animated manner possible with a clearly, accented and well-worded voice which resulted in building a world of imagination.
Well read people are able to convey hard facts, blunt truths and even simple information (which many a time creates confusion) in the best digestible manner because of their mental association with bestsellers/authors throughout their childhood in fact, lives. They have polished and well etched presentation skills accessed from the reservoirs of the minds of their favorite authors, say, Willaim Shakespeare! Books change an almost ‘status quo’ mindset/mood whenever we access them. A good book will provide hope when you are down, and comfort, when you are sad. Books/reading develops self-helping and problem solving skills. Reading books does slow down the pace of gathering information compared to the television but that is what is needed for the brain – peace and ease of mind - to retain and process information in the right manner. Books/Sports/Music are powerful peacemakers (great idea for gifts) as they have always, bonded human relations across the global in a spirit of forgiveness (soothed and given reasoning or a second thought to feelings of hatred and revenge) and have brought out the most humane qualities in mankind that of friendliness and brotherhood no wonder one sees advertisements touting that dressing and books are the mark of a civilized man, e.g. Mahatma Gandhi. With slashed online rates for books, it would be a good idea to give them as gifts because one has always cherished memories of a friend on seeing a book gifted to him or her.
Above all, you do not have to hop from shop-to-shop but from website-to-website. You gain on knowledge, save on transportation and end up encashing on offers that are best for book lovers buy one-take-one-free! We at have a variety of shopping malls and online stores offering the best bargains from online shopping malls and online stores. Please visit our website, for magazine, books, ebooks and audio books especially, as the peak shopping season offers classy discounts especially, during this part of the year.

Learn to Play Acoustic Guitar Free
Thursday, July 29th, 2010
Some people never develop a deep understanding of the acoustic guitar. That does not mean that anybody cannot have fun by just being an amateur guitar player. To learn a few chords and practice the technique of strumming can be very rewarding in spite of the fact that it does not make you a virtuoso acoustic guitar player. Speaking of virtuosos, let us take a quick look at the variety of guitar styles that come under the heading of “acoustic guitar”. There is Celtic guitar music that grew out of the folk guitar boom in the nineteen sixties. Celtic music was not originally played on the guitar, so the guitar and the alternate tunings used to play Celtic music have been grafted onto this ancient music tradition. So, as well as folk music, there is the classical guitar which is classical music played on the guitar, whether or not the piece was originally composed to be played on the guitar. Then there is Flamenco, the traditional music of the Gypsies of Spain, and the Bossa Nova music of twentieth century Brazil.
There are, of course many other more exotic forms of acoustic guitar music but as we are trying to keep things simple in this article, we will just stick to the basic acoustic guitar styles. If you want to learn how to play the acoustic guitar for free, then it is almost easier done than said. There are lots of free guitar lessons on the internet and all basic lessons apply to the acoustic guitar. You will learn about chord families, strumming techniques, picking strokes, tuning your guitar and how to change the strings. For someone who is just going to be strumming chords, it is very important to get your guitar playing posture correct. If you think that because you are only an amateur guitar player you do not need to pay attention to how you hold the guitar, think again. Your posture governs how you look and feel when you are playing.
Even though you want to learn for free, many people who have gone through the experience of teaching themselves say that taking two or three months worth of guitar lessons at the beginning is much better than struggling with the basics by yourself. I have got to say from my own personal experience that learning chords and how they fit together to make music is a great voyage of discovery which I am glad I took. Everybody is different, I guess.
So what is available for free on the internet for acoustic guitar students? Google is the place to start. Just do a search for free guitar lessons, or free guitar lessons with the name of your favorite music inserted somewhere. Google books has all the good books on learning acoustic guitar, and many of them have extensive previews. Your next stop should be Google video or YouTube for free video guitar lessons.
As you go through the free acoustic guitar lessons on the internet, remember to keep it simple. It can be tempting to get distracted by some interesting guitar lesson video that is outside your main area of interest, but as you are still learning, it is best to stick to the basics for now.

Amazon Kindle How-to Series: Saving E-books and Audio Books on Your Kindle
Wednesday, July 21st, 2010
One of the great features of the Kindle Wireless Reading Device from Amazon is that it holds so many e-books and audio books. Even with it’s fairly large built-in storage however, your book collection might exceed the limits of what can fit on your Kindle.
To help you handle your growing collection of e-books and audio books, the you can add extra memory to your Kindle in the form of an SD memory card. You can purchase these cards in many sizes from 1 GB up-to 16 GB. At the time you read this 32 GB cards may readily be available and affordable. Installing SD memory in your Kindle is straightforward. You can find complete instructions in our Kindle How-To Series available in the web-site listed below.
Once you have your memory card installed it’s time to move some of the e-books or audio books stored in your Kindle’s main memory to your new SD Card. There are a few things you should consider first before “making the move.”
1. Audio books are a good candidate for moving from your Kindle’s main memory to the SD card. Audio book files can be large – some are up-to 90 mb or more. Audio books will quickly consumer your Kindle’s main memory leaving less space for your e-books.
2. If you’ve purchased books that are on the Amazon digital site and have yet to be sent to your Kindle these also might be good candidates to load onto your SD memory card. This will keep all of your e-books and audio books in one place in-case you run into a situation where you do not have wireless access.
3. Pictures, music files, and digital files other than e-books also consume a lot of space in the Kindle’s main memory. Again, this makes them good choices to move to the new SD card you’ve installed in your Kindle.
Now – let’s take a look at your Kindle and get ready to save some files to your SD memory card. Here are the steps you can follow to do this -
A. Turn on your Kindle
B. Move the scroll wheel to “Menu” and press to select the Main Menu
C. Scroll to “Content Manager” on the Main Menu the press to select the Content Manager
D. Once the Content Manager screen opens take a look at your list of audio books and e-books – pay specific attention to the storage location of the book listed directly under the first word of the title –
a. “Kindle” – the book is stored in your Kindle’s main memory
b. “SD Card” – any books you’ve moved to your SD Card will have this location
c. “Amazon” – books you’ve purchased but that have not been downloaded to your Kindle will have this location
E. Choose a book now located on your Kindle by scrolling to the location of the book and pressing the scroll wheel to “select” the book. When you do this you will notice an “x” in the box immediately to the right of the book’s title.
F. Next scroll back down to “Menu” at the bottom of the Kindle screen and press the scroll wheel to select.
G. When the Menu opens, scroll to “Move to SD Card” and press the scroll wheel to select.
H. Once you do this you will notice the location icon will show the book is being transferred to your Kindle’s SD memory card. For example you will see an arrow pointing from the “Kindle” location to the SD Card location.
I. When the move is complete the location icon below the title will change from “Kindle” to “SD Card” – this is how you know the transfer process is complete.
That’s all there is to it! You’ve now learned how-to quickly save books from your Kindle’s main memory to the SD Card you’ve installed in your Kindle.
Complete instructions with photos can be found at the web site in the resource box below.

Why It’s a Great Time to be an Artist or Writer
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
If my title is not cynical, what can I possibly mean when funds are being cut to non-profits, when people look twice at the cost of theater tickets and stay home to watch broadcast television, when even masterpieces fail to bring in money for Christies? All luxury or nonessential purchases like books and art will be scaled back. Strapped corporations and executives are dumping their vanity collections onto the prestige auction houses who are seeing prices and attendance fall precipitously. Many small art-related businesses will fail, including bookstores, small theater companies, galleries, even museums. Surely this is a time for a great wailing to arise in the land of the creatives, who have already pinned their last hopes on a new W.P.A program that will surely be announced soon.
So why in Picasso’s name would this be a good time to be an artist or writer? Let’s start with Bush or should I say Bush-hating. Artists and writers have been a disproportionate amount of effort “fighting the man.” The stance, however justified, made it easy to structure plots and feel good about poorly realized efforts because the artist was focused on the urgent need to topple the evil regime. How much subtlety was required?
With a new dynamic Democratic administration firmly gripping power in Washington, there is no longer a need to waste any more effort haranguing the public about the war in Iraq, and his other unpopular positions. Soon “his” mistakes will be “our” mistakes as Democrats innovate and/or borrow from the previous administration and we will only have our own to blame. Only the farthest left of us (like the ones already unhappy with Obama’s practicality) will continue to use artistic outrage as their main source for inspiration.
I am hoping the whole concept of “artist as politician” phase will come to an end. Sure, we can still support our causes of global warming, corporatism, land mines, and nuclear disarmament if we like, but adults in Washington will be doing their best to represent the constituencies that have promoted these causes. We no longer will have to shout at them, though there is no guarantee that we will like their solutions or pace. Nevertheless, artists will find the protest stance somewhat emptier, somewhat less compelling and, hopefully will be moving on to new, less knee-jerk, less repetitive, less strident content.
Back to the issue of business failures in the art community. It’s not that I think the art world is too fat and will benefit from a crash diet, but it’s worth thinking about who the market for art has been and who it might become. Art has been, in a sense, also feeding at the trough of the high finance world. How many people can afford a painting over say $10,000 (and I’m stretching here). Clearly the middle class doesn’t buy much original art. Why not? Because the content (often incomprehensible but supported by museums and academics) is largely non-compelling to average people.
In the literary world, where the readership is shrinking, agents and publishers are running scared. They want another J. K. Rowling phenomenon but aren’t sure where and how to find it. Meanwhile a tsunami of self publishers and bloggers are going around the publishing world for their reading. Both the sellers and makers of art need to accept this challenge. If they have something to say, how should they say it and where? New forms, hybrids and experiments are springing up and the world of criticism (e.g. The New York Times Book Review) are holding up their noses in hopes that the riff-raff will all go away soon and everyone will return to network television, Broadway shows and industry-picked “geniuses” in the print world. That’s not going to happen. People are entertaining themselves in new ways, from YouTube, to bloggers, to game designers, to “low-brow” art that embraces illustrators, graffiti artists and tattooists as “real” artists. Some see this as a devastating collapse of “high” culture, I see it as evidence that in many ways the arts have not been doing their job.
Music might be an exception as well as an example. While mainstream media continues to site declining CD sales something we’re supposed to fret about, an explosion of interest in music is happening all over the world. The internet is allowing us to create our own custom radio stations (e.g. Pandora), iTunes is making it easier to buy exactly what we want, and portable music devices have freed us from Big Radio and Big Music companies. This is partly because, unlike say painting or the literary novel (the bad ones not the good ones), the general public has never given up its love of music and never will. So music will lead the way. Will there be fewer superstar groups but more people creating the music they love? I hope so. Will it be difficult to find the new geniuses if they are not picked out of the crowd and promoted by Big Music? Maybe, maybe not. Most likely the internet will evolve forms of self criticism which will allow more diverse music to survive as the cost of getting that music to the public continues to decline. Overall will less money go to music because people are used to getting it free? Maybe. Inevitably good stuff costs money, think organic produce. People pay more everyday for both the label and the confidence in its quality and taste, even if they can’t prove it or taste it.
People will pay to be entertained. Collecting original art on a small scale could conceivably be something people do again once their more confident of their taste. How many people worry about their taste in music needing outside experts to tell them whether or not it’s good? I know what I like is the rule. In fact, for millions, if its popular it’s already time to dig deeper and find the creatives (the new new) that have already been there and done that and are now doing something altogether new.
So we might be on the edge of a burst in creativity. I’ll make my final point be referencing an economically difficult but extremely creative period another country experienced: The Weimar Republic. This from Wikipedia:
“The 1920s saw a massive cultural revival in Germany. It was, arguably, the most innovative period of cultural change in Germany. Innovative street theatre brought plays to the public, the cabaret scene became very popular. Women were americanised, wearing makeup, short hair, smoking and breaking out of tradition. Music was created with a practical purpose, such as Schoenberg’s ‘atonality’ and there was a new type of architecture taught at ‘Bauhaus’ schools. Art reflected the new ideas of the time with artists such as Grosz being fined for defaming the military and for blasphemy.”
There’s plenty of opportunity out there, folks, stop whining and get busy!

The Why of SEO - a Thermal Lifejacket for the Economic Ice Age!
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010
Despite the many and varied articles written on how SEO is done, most people have only a vague appreciation of WHY it is absolutely essential. As the economic downturn bites into revenue streams, can you afford to ignore a key website business strategy?
That includes a depressing number of website designers, some of whom actually tell their clients that SEO is a waste of time and money, and that it’s quite unnecessary these days because Google is smarter than ever before… Au contraire - it becomes more and more critical every day, as website numbers expand exponentially! Lack of knowledge is not confined to website designers, it also includes a number of wanna-be SEO firms who make outrageous claims about their special relationship and affinity with Google etc, but have little idea of what it takes to consistently succeed in attaining Top 30 rankings.
There are many articles written on the HOW of SEO, covering the many and varied aspects of the art of improving your site’s position in search engine ranking pages (SERPs). Whilst most people have heard the term “search engine optimization” and have a vague appreciation (or apprehension) of the hoped-for outcome, surprisingly few people seem to really understand WHY it is absolutely essential.
Be very aware that in most cases website design is taught as an Art, not as a Business discipline. Website designers are rarely taught anything about search engine optimization, and few are interested in mastering the skills required to produce optimal results. That’s all very fine and dandy – but it leaves a lot of website owners desperately disappointed in mediocre results! You’ve probably heard the analogy about building a shop in the middle of a forest too, I bet? Seriously, it really does not matter how beautiful the site is – if no one finds it, then it’s just a gorgeous waste of virtual space.
Content is Still King
Regardless of the various conflicting opinions, Google conspiracy theories and misinformation, it comes down to a very simple concept - content quality, and accurate content classification. Content is where many sites fail dismally! The sites that thrive are those with well written, well organised original, interesting and useful content. Don’t copy other peoples stuff. Aside from being illegal, at best it immediately downgrades you to second best… As a general rule, from an SEO perspective, bear in mind the most fundamental issue - Google loathes duplicate content!
Classification
There are literally millions of websites, each competing for viewers in a particular niche. Reasons for their existence vary across the A to Z spectrum - advertising, entertainment, comedy, educational, humour, informational, music, news, promotional, sports, wine, video, zoos… you get the picture, right?
In the world of books we have the Dewey decimal classification system. Every published work is assigned an ISBN number, and libraries classify all books under a rigid hierarchical subject classification system. It’s not perfect, but it works pretty well because every one uses and understands it! Erudite people write insightful book reviews, which are sometimes included in advertising and promotions. Hold this thought, its relevant to a following section. You want to find a book on a particular topic, or by a specific author, you do a search and Eureka! You’ve found it, there’s a list, even! The best books are reviewed multiple times, and take pride of place in the “best sellers” rack.
Relevancy Ranking
Using different terminology, search engines are trying hard to do the same thing – to give their searchers the most accurate list possible, containing exactly what they want, so they can pick and choose from it! Unfortunately, there is no Dewey classification system on the web. The closest thing to a hierarchical subject listing is the Open Directory, Yahoo, or one of the thousands of other web directories - all of which are inconsistently organised into completely different illogical structures!
So, here we have Google and other search engines trying valiantly to index and categorize the billions of pages on millions of websites, in hundreds of countries in a multiplicity of languages. Then, they have to calculate each page’s relevance to specific search queries…
Are You Helping or Hindering?
That’s where YOU come into the picture… It’s a big, big task – have you made any effort at all to help Google to help you? Or is your website fuzzy and unfocused, with no clear statement of content or purpose? In most cases, sites are constructed with vague intentions to do SEO as an optional extra sometime in the future… What, you want Google to do everything for you?
Done Any Homework?
Do you have any idea how your primary audience searches for the information, products or services you offer? Do the pages on your site describe your content using terms your clients use? Because that’s the only way Google can match searchers with relevant content! What? You actually forgot to do any market research before launching the site? You have no accurate, researched, hard data on the keywords your potential clients would use? You asked your friends at work for ideas? Absolutely incredible!
Let us pretend you’re looking for clients for your small bed & breakfast business in Christchurch, New Zealand. You are optimistic that potential customers in New Zealand, Australia and the UK will be able to find your website amongst the millions of competing B&B pages on the web, be convinced by your persuasive advertising copy and elegant pictures… you’d also like them to come and book directly with you, to avoid hefty commission payments on the dozens of B&B Advertising Directory sites who also want you to pay to advertise! Dream on!
So You Want Google To Work For You?
You’d really like Google et al to help connect your potential clients to your business via Search Engine Results Pages by making your site No.1… And you certainly want “qualified” traffic from Google, visitors who are specifically looking for exactly what you offer!
Anyone who thinks they can survive online without Google, Yahoo and MSN is either a thoroughly well-rounded idiot, or is a household name who does not need to advertise to generate qualified traffic. There is no middle ground.
But here’s where it gets hard! How will Google do that? What solid information have you provided Google in your on-site content, and in the off-site links to your site? Have you got a Domain Name which encapsulates your business type and location; Bed-Breakfast-Christchurch.co.nz? Or a cryptic name, like; BnBChChNZ.com? Of the two, which is most likely to give the SE its first clue as to what your site is about?
What is On-Site SEO
Think about it this way… Does your home page have an explicit and accurate Title that provides a direct and unequivocal statement of the site’s business purpose in 70 characters? Does the Title say “Bed & Breakfast Accommodation, Christchurch New Zealand” or does it say “Welcome to Dusty Lodge” or something equally asinine?
Does your home page have an explicit and accurate Description that provides a brief outline of your business purpose, unique selling proposition, and call to action, encapsulated in 150 – 200 characters? Or does it contain some vague warm and fuzzy drivel about beaches and sunsets?
Keep the book analogy in your mind, and take a look at your Home page, particularly the first heading and first paragraph… “Welcome to my website” is not a productive approach! What does it tell your visitors about you? It tells me that you are at best naïve and both you and your website designer need SEO counselling! And think about that first paragraph… is it an accurate summary of the site’s reason for existence? Eliminate that fruity, cheesy, fluffy verbiage immediately!
If your website is required to deliver a return on investment, particularly by selling products or services, or delivering customer service, informing or entertaining, your really need to accurately describe your website’s content, and allow it to become visible online. What’s that I hear? Oh, you want it to make you rich as well? But you don’t really want to make a serious commitment or effort to do the job properly? Right… good luck with that! And remember that old GIGO acronym – “Garbage In, Garbage Out!”
What is Off-Site SEO?
This may surprise you, but some people are dishonest about their site content. Frankly, some people handle the truth in a very awkward fashion indeed… Telling Google that your site is about Pamela Anderson, when its actually selling Bart Simpson comics, is deuced annoying to the people who visit it! Therefore, Google and other SE’s decided long ago that some external verification of every website’s content would assist their efforts to deliver the most relevant SERPs to their clients. Makes perfect sense to me…
How is this achieved, I hear you ask. Well, you’ve heard of links, right? Back to the book analogy – think of good links as being like a series of book reviews! What if lots of people are writing positive things about your site? What if multiple, external, widely distributed sites are all saying that your site is about “Bed & Breakfast Accommodation Christchurch NZ” huh? The balance of probability that your site is relevant to such a search is positively impacted by this external confirmation! A coincidence of keywords in on-site content and off-site links reassures Google immensely! Those keywords in the off-site links are referred to as anchor text, and should form the link title.
No, Its Not Rocket Science
Frankly, search engine optimisation, in the pure sense of the term, is not particularly difficult to understand, or to do. The aim of the search engines is to provide their customers with the content most relevant to the search they are making. Therefore, your salvation lies in making your content relevant to the known searches! Do some thorough keyword research, learn and understand your target audience’s searching behaviour. Plan pages that target specific, high-volume, low competition search phrases.
Don’t be vague, don’t waffle, and help Google to help you!
When the economic gravy pot is bubbling merrily, and there’s ample business gravy slopping over, even the mediocre get a share. But when the economic ice age casts midnight shadows at noon, and credit wolf packs softly pad the empty streets, howling balefully at the waning moon… then, when you’re sucking the last congealed streaks of business gravy off your tarnished website spoon, ask yourself… Can you afford your website to be second rate, disorganised and drifting ever further into the icy wastes of mediocrity?
With a better understanding why SEO is so important to your website’s success, will you continue to ignore it?

Enjoyment and Entertainment Value of Cooking
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Far too often we get caught up in the necessity of cooking in order to eat and forget the absolute joy that can be found through the act of cooking. Of course this isn’t limited to stovetop cooking. There are many men and women around the world who find baking to be an extremely pleasurable pastime in addition to traditional stovetop cooking or even barbecuing on a grill. The main distinction occurs in how you perceive your cooking projects.
How Do Your View Cooking?
While this question is asked somewhat rhetorically, it is a question you should ask yourself and answer. Do you view cooking as a chore or duty or do you view it as a project? There is something much more exciting about embarking on a new project than getting around to a loathsome chore. For further details go to 100cookingtips.com. If you do view cooking as a chore the more important question might be why?
Some common reasons that people dislike cooking includes the following: lack of skill, lack of confidence, boredom, for more details visit to www.fair-recipes.com or you could simply dislike the inevitable clean up far more than you enjoy the process of cooking. For each of these, there are solutions if you are willing to make the effort.
A lack of skill when it comes to cooking can be easily corrected in most cases by taking a few cooking classes. Classes are offered for varying degrees of skill sets and are meant to help you develop your cooking talents while teaching you the basics of meal planning and preparation. You can increase your skills by taking more classes down the road.
While a lack of confidence is a little more difficult to address having a few ‘dinner parties’ in which your quests can compliment your culinary talents can often solve this particular dilemma. The key in this process is to plan your menu carefully and remain well within your comfort zone. You will be amazed at the wonderfully rich and delicious meals that can be prepared with very little effort if you are willing to sift through the recipe books in order to find them.
Boredom in the kitchen is perhaps one of the easiest problems to fix there is. The solution is exceedingly simple-find a challenge. Try cooking Thai or Indian cuisine. Try more difficult recipes. Try making only meals from scratch or simply try broadening your use of spices and seasonings. There are many things you can do in order to bring some excitement back into your kitchen. You may even discover hidden talents and tastes in the process.
There will always be clean up. My suggestion is to make a deal with either your partner or your children and they can draw straws over who cleans up. You can also visit at fair-recipes.com. Of course if this won’t work in your family, for more details visit to www.cat-head-biscuit.com you could always turn over a new leaf and clean as you go whenever possible. This makes the clean up process after dinner so much simpler to handle that it is well worth a few extra minutes during meal prep.
Cooking for pleasure is really the only way to cook. If you have difficulties when it comes to finding the enjoyment and entertainment value of cooking, perhaps it’s time you bring some fun back into your kitchen. If you’re barbecuing, put on some Jimmy Buffet and dance around your kitchen. If you’re cooking Italian find some nice Italian music to set the mood. Bring the fun back into your kitchen and you will find that cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore.

The Slight Edge of Personal Development
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010What is the Slight Edge and what does it have to do with personal development, self help, success, prosperity, abundance, wealth, business, career, money and freedom? The Slight Edge is a philosophy for living life that was introduced to me by a man named Jeff Olson. Not only are the principles of the Slight Edge intertwined with all of the things mentioned above, but it also is at work in the lives of those who experience depression, poverty, poor health, debt, unemployment, jobs they hate and unfulfilling relationships. The Slight Edge is at work all the time, every day in the life of every single conscious human being on this planet.
You can read Jeff Olson’s book or listen to his audio program about the Slight Edge, but I will do my best to simply summarize its meaning here for you. The Slight Edge is really referring to the very slight difference between making positive choices and negative ones, between choosing things that will enhance and improve our lives versus things that will bring us less than we truly desire. For instance, each day you have an opportunity to make hundreds, if not thousands of decisions! When to wake up, what to wear, what to eat, whether or not to exercise, what to say or not say to family and friends, what to read, what to watch, where to go, what people to see and spend time with, what to listen to, what to think and on and on and on.
Most of these “choices” that we make each day may not even feel like choices because so many of them are made on more of an unconscious level than a conscious one. However, even choices that we make day and day out require our conscious approval in order to take place and we have the power and ability within ourselves to change what choices we make at any given time. Understanding how the Slight Edge works and the difference it can make in your life over time will give you an added sense of discipline and desire to make those positive choices that are in your best interest.
An important element of the Slight Edge philosophy is understanding that most individual choices are easy to do, but they are also easy not to do. It’s easy to choose to eat a healthy salad for lunch instead of a hamburger, but it is also easy not to do that. Therein lies the power of the Slight Edge choice. To understand the influence of the Slight Edge at work in your life it is important to look at a given choice over time, let’s say one year. If you watch one hour of television each day, that doesn’t really seem like a big deal right? It is certainly easy to do and it could also be said that it is easy not do. On average, Americans watch much more than one hour of television a day, but for the sake of this illustration we will assume you watch just one hour. The equates to seven hours a week, approximately 30 hours a month and 365 hours a year, which is equivalent to more than nine 40 hour work weeks! I’m not saying this is good or bad I’m just illustrating the power of the Slight Edge at work. When you think about your daily choices in terms of their impact and influence in your life over one year or one decade, it puts those activities into better perspective.
Now, I’m not saying we should not watch TV, go to movies, relax, or anything like that. I enjoy doing all of those things, in proper balance. My intention in sharing my experience with this philosophy with you is to help you understand that there are little simple things that you can begin doing today, that if done over time, will absolutely transform your life. It is about understanding the potential that each of us have to grow, to progress, to improve, to create, to expand and to be a better, more fulfilled and happy person in one year than we are today! How can we go about making Slight Edge improvements to our daily choices so that we can experience consistent growth and personal development in our lives? There are several ways and I will share a few that have worked phenomenally well for me.
Reading personal development or self help books and listening to similar audio programs has made a huge difference in my life. Do you realize that if you read just 10 pages from a personal development book every day that you will have read 3,650 pages by the end of just one year! Sure, the math is easy and it makes sense, but that translates to easily one or two dozen books. It only takes about 30 minutes a day to do that yet the impact upon the way you think, act and live your life will be tremendously enhanced. Reading 10 pages a day is easy to do. It is also easy not to do. Therein lies the power of the Slight Edge decision. Additionally, if you listen to just 15 minutes of inspiring personal development audio programs, podcasts or audiobooks each day while driving to and from work or while exercising, that equates to 91.25 hours of listening in one year; more than two 40 hour work weeks put together! Do you think putting such content into your mind and applying it in your life would help you to become a better person and be more successful in achieving your personal and professional goals? Absolutely! It is easy to do? Is it easy not to do?
You see, a large majority of people read trashy magazines, watch tv and listen to worthless radio instead of reading personal development books, listening to inspiring audio and taking a little time out to improve their lives. We should not be surprised if our lives our not what we wish them to be if we are not taking the simple daily actions to improve ourselves and to be better. Our lives right now, in this present moment, are nothing more than a cumulative result of everything that we have thought and done previously in life! If you do not like your situation, your relationships, your job, your build, your income (or lack thereof), then look in the mirror and make a firm resolve to yourself that you will begin TODAY to make changes in the Slight Edge choices you make each day. Don’t beat yourself and drop deeper into depression. Celebrate and get excited that you now know what you can do to change your life for the better. Will you transform into the life of your dreams overnight? Of course not. However, by making slight changes each day in the seemingly insignificant choices of what you do, your life will absolutely be transformed in a years time, probably much sooner. I have experienced this first hand and I absolutely know that it works.
When I was a teenager I was hanging out with the wrong crowd and got involved in drinking, drugs, smoking, theft and all variety of unhealthy behavior. My life was falling apart quickly and the future did not look to bright for me. After having a very scary experience with drugs I made a firm decision that I was going to change my life. I made some drastic decisions at that point to dis-associate from my friends, to get rid of all my depressing music, to stop abusing substances and to begin working heavily on improving myself, my mind, my body, my life. What I’ve found for myself and for others is that immediate change can be noticed and experienced, especially when you are making these changes at a very low point in your life. If you are in the depths of despair and the whole world seems to be crashing in upon you then shifting your mind, body and spirit can make a visual transformational difference upon you in a matter of hours. A lot of that depends upon the intensity of your determination to change and to improve your life and your willingness to disassociate yourself, as much as possible, from those things or people that have had such a powerful negative influence over you. This isn’t about running from your problems, but rather about taking back control of your life and not giving that control to anyone but yourself.
I read book after book about personal development. About thoughts, behavior, attitude, goals, success, achievement, etc. Just get your hands on any personal development books that really jump out at you, dive in and absorb as much as you can as quickly as you can. What I loved about these books is that there were always numerous ideas and suggestions that I could immediately begin applying in my mind and in my life to see how they would make a difference. I would do the exercises, follow the guidance and see what happened. I also did a lot of spiritual exploration during this time, praying, meditation, reading scripture and just cleansing myself as well as I knew how. This will be a different process for everyone depending upon your religious persuasions, where you live and what spiritual books and teachers are a part of your life. I also began eating more healthy foods, exercising and getting more adequate rest every night. This was invigorating to build my body, to develop and to see that it was ready to take on new challenges and to be pushed to new limits. That felt good and seemed to help accelerate the growth I was experiencing mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well.
I was 18 years of age when I made that decision to change my life for the better. I am now 31 and have by no means reached the pinnacle of personal growth and achievement. However, I have been fortunate to have enjoyed many remarkable experiences and blessings in my life, due in large part to the fact that I have been continually working on improving myself and the lives of those around me. I’ve traveled throughout the United States and Canada. I received scholarships to college and graduated with honors. I married a beautiful woman when I was 24 and we now have two incredible children with our third to arrive this summer. I have started businesses, invested in real estate, managed multi-million dollar companies and consulted entrepreneurs. I currently own a multi-million dollar business within the Health and Wellness industry and am able to help people from all walks of life all over the world. My future is bright and I know that there are no limits to what I can achieve as long as I continue to follow the Slight Edge path of personal development and striving to improve the lives of others.
It is my desire that you will join with me in this phenomenal journey of life. If you are looking to make some changes in your life, do it now! Take the time for some personal exploration, set your goals, decide what small things you can begin doing each day that will have a powerful cumulative effect upon you and your family in your life. If you are looking to make a professional change or to work within a business that is perfectly aligned with these principles, then let me know. I’d love to explore the possibility of working together with you in my business and helping you to accomplish all of the goals that you set for yourself.
