Music Book and the Guitar

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

If you want to learn to play the guitar you are going to have to put some time in. The fact of the matter is that you are not going to learn to play the guitar overnight. Luckily, there are many techniques that you can follow in order to learn the skills you need to rock out hard.

The easiest way of learning to play the guitar is with a music book. Books are a great source of knowledge in the music industry, and this definitely holds true if you want to learn how to play the guitar. There are some things that you will need to know if you want to learn to play the guitar. A few of the more important tips are listed below.

1. You cannot learn to play the guitar unless it is in good playing condition. This means that your guitar will have to be in key so that you can get off to a fast start. After you are sure of this the next step is to find a quiet place that will allow you to concentrate and practice in peace.

2. Knowing your guitar and how it works is a key to success. The more that you know about your guitar the better chance there is that you will be able to get good at playing it. You should search for as much information as you can about the guitar industry. This way you will know what to expect, as well as how to adjust to any problems that may come up.

3. Do not start out by aiming for high goals. Before you can become the next great guitar player you will first need to start at the bottom. Start with the basics that you can learn from a music book and then move on from there. As long as you do not get ahead of yourself you should be able to move forward in the right direction.

4. Of course it would be exciting to jump straight to the top of the industry, but you should stick with what you know at first. If you enjoy playing a particular song stay with it until you have it mastered. When you do this you will get a sense of pride that you are actually moving forward.

5. You can gain confidence by starting simple and organizing performances. The more practice you have the better you will get. And when you can prove that you can play in front of others it will be much easier for you to gain confidence.

Jazz From Goa, India

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

HP- Tell us something about yourself.

CD- I’m a Mumbai goan looking forward to being a Goa goan very soon. I’ve reached two important milestones in my career. One is, after decades of playing everyone elses music i’ve development a style of my own and the biggest compliment I get these days is when someone recognizes my bassplaying on some tune they heard somewhere, they call up to confirm and..voila! The other milestone is probably every musicians dream, to produce music out of my own studio. A dream that will come true for me within this year when I setup my own state of the art studio in Sangolda. I’ve also setup an organisation called Jazz Goa with the help of fellow musicians and jazz enthusiasts in Goa.

HP- What drew you towards jazz?

CD- Jazz is a huge word, it should be spelt jjjaaaazzzzz! Seriously though, I think jazz is the most open, alive and evolving form of music that allows a musician to be him/herself. Most other forms of music demands a musician to follow trends and tradition or create stuff that’s currently hip. Whereas a jazz musician goes about his business listening, assimilating and finally innovating with yet another genre of jazz! We now have dixiland-jazz, swing-jazz, bebop-jazz, funk-jazz, rock-jazz, pop-jazz, fusion-jazz, latin-jazz, indo-jazz, mando-jazz… to cut a long story short, there’s a -jazz attached to every genre of music. And there will be a -jazz attached to every genre that comes along. I’m a musician who’s atracted to anything that looks, feels, smells, tastes and even sounds like music, so naturally I choose jazz as I get to play it ALL.

HP- What sets apart jazz music from other genres?

CD- Jazz is the only form of music that embraces all other forms and it is no longer American music. Today jazz can safely be called world music.

HP- What led you to become a jazz artiste?

CD- From amoung all the different genre’s of music I grew up listening to, for some reason it was always jazz that struck those extended chords within me. I could always hear the human and very often super human element in a jazz rendition.

HP- Your favourite jazz aristes/tracks.

CD- You’ll need to extend this interview by a few thousand pages to answer that. My all time favourite however was a bassplayer called Jaco Pastorius who revolutionised bassplaying taking bass right upfront, over, under and right through a song.

HP- To whom would you attribute your credentials as a jazz musician?

CD- To everyone i’ve worked with and everyone I would like to work with someday.

HP- Where and how did you train to be a jazz artiste?

CD- I have no formal training in music, I learnt music listening to other musicians, assimilating what I liked and using it consiously or subconsiously in performance until i developed a style of my own. Once I decided to play professionally though, I did study the technicalities through some great music books that are easily available these days.

HP- How do you prepare for a gig?

CD- I make sure there’s enough soda to go with the whisky…just kidding! It depends, if it is a concert where I would be performing my own compositions, I get the tunes composed, then get the band to rehearse and sound the way I heard it in my head. As it often turnsout, input from the rest of the band takes the tune to a dimension I would never have imagined. So you see, music is all about connecting and collaborating, don’t believe any of those fantastic one man bands. They’re faking it for monetary reasons, not that I have anything against it. All is fair in love, war and music.

HP- Talking about gigs, where and when did you first perform/how long have you been into jazz?

CD- Like most musicians I first got into music with school/college bands. I then graduated into fivestar hotel resident bands whose repertoire was made up mainly of jazz standards. I did that for ten years, playing music every night made me a musician.

HP- What is the jazz scene like in India, and Goa in particular?

CD- The jazz scene in India, Goa or anywhere in the world is the same. There’s a niche group of performers and listeners that grows all the time. Hopefully with jazz’s open armed evolution, it will grow into the global sound of music.

HP- What have been your highs and lows in your career thus far?

CD- The highs have always been the applause at the end of a track performed, the lows would be finding out that the applause was actually for the sixer Sachin hit on the big screen just besides the stage at Jazz by the Bay in Mumbai.

HP- How would you explain your role as a jazz musician in society?

CD- A jazz musician gives people a nicer high than some other interesting social highs.

HP- Define jazz.

CD- Jazz is improvised music. Sometimes structured, sometimes orchestrated, sometimes free of form and almost always, spontaneously created.

HP- Notable gigs/performances.

CD- The world reknowned Hennessey XO jazz tour has always been featuring jazz artistes signed by the American Blue Note label. Last year for the first time a jazz band outside the label, from far away India, was selected for this prestigious international tour. I was the bassplayer for that band. An unforgettable experience for sure. More recently my indo-jazz fusion band ‘The Brown Indian Band’ has been approached to open for Sting’s European tour this year. Fingers are crossed about that one.

HP- Collaborations with other musicians.

CD- I am contineously collaborating with musicians from all over the world thanks to the internet and my website http://www.hullocheck.com

HP- I understand you have been into different genres of music and worked with various ensembles. Tell us more.

CD- As I mentioned it before, when it comes to music I want it ALL. Name the genre and chances are, i’ve been there. You’ll find traces of just about every genre in my own music. There are very few musicians in the world today, who would match the number of bands and musicians I have worked with.

HP- Currently performing at…

CD- I currently perform on two resident contracts in Mumbai at the JW Marriott hotel in the afternoons and the Taj Lands End hotel in the nights. I also take timeoff from these two gigs to perform at concerts and corporate events in India and abroad. So that averages some sixty gigs a month!

HP- Your hobbies/interests…

CD- My main hobby and interest is my profession today. Everyone else works for a living, I play for mine. Someone once told me ‘All play and no work makes…makes me tick!’ Seriously though, I am very keen on improving the plight of most goan musicians in Goa. I was one sometime ago so I should know the raw deal most of them get. My plan is to set up Jazz Goa as an umbrella organisation for not just jazz but all the other immense artistic talent in Goa. To start with my studio in Sangolda will record and produce deserving artistes. Jazz Goa will then launch the best from there at a global level. Jazz Goa has already produced four audio CD’s and a DVD that is available in Goa exclusively at Vibes Music in Margao and online at http://www.jazzgoa.com

Online Audio Books: The Advantages of Downloading Your Audio Book

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Getting online audio books is so easy. Unfortunately, if you choose to get your audio books on tape or compact disc, you will have to pay more for them because of the product design, and you will have to wait for them to arrive in the mail. With the mail problems of today, it could get lost, stolen or even sent to the wrong person. Although this does not happen that often, it is something to be concerned about as you do not want to lose it, especially if you have already been waiting for days and weeks. In the world of today, you no longer have to wait for very long if you have internet access. You can pretty much get what you want when you want it.

With online audio books in digital format, you will get the audio books instantly. You do not have to wait for them to arrive in the mail, pay the higher cost, pay for shipping, or only have the ability to listen to them in certain places. You can hear downloaded audio books on computers, PDA, MP3 players, and so on. You have the convenience of listening when you want to and where you want to.

You can also get the latest audio books as soon as you go to your favorite online audio book store. If you were going to buy a cassette tape or compact disc, you would have to wait for the audio book to be produced in these particular formats. With downloadable audio books, you do not have to wait to listen to the audio book of your choice.

There are, of course, some disadvantages to downloading an audio book online. However, these problems can be easily fixed. Audio books are much larger than other things you would download, such as music. Because of their size, they will take longer to download. The time it will take will depend on the website you are downloading from, and the speed of your internet connection. These might seem like some huge disadvantages, but they can be easily remedied.

1. Download in your spare time. Wait until you know you will not need to use the Internet. Set aside some time to download your audio book so you can step away from the computer and complete other tasks that need to be done, watch your favorite television show or movie, or just relax while you wait for your audio book to download.

2. Search for another downloading place. If you have a high-speed connection at work, you can download your audio book there instead of at home. First, make sure it is all right with your boss. Just tell them that you will be performing other work tasks while you are downloading your audio book and then do just that. If your local library has a higher speed internet connection than you do, you might also be able to download it there. Just call your local library and ask them. You could also ask a friend or family member that has a high-speed internet connection to download your downloadable audio books for you.

3. One more thing you can do to shorten the download time is to search and find audio book formats that are specifically created just for you and others who have a slower internet connection. These particular formats will download online audio books faster and easier for you.

Having said that, good downloadable audio book sites allow you to choose three qualities of download: high, medium and low, the latter taking the least amount of time to download because it has less megabytes, which reduces the quality a little, but this is generally fine with spoken word audio books.

Home Recording Studio How to Start ?

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Regarding an inexpensive but effective Home Recording Studio, the first thing to do is to carefully go over your budget, because once you get going it will be the little bits and pieces that can nickel and dime you to death. Know how much you can safely spend without putting yourself into financial jeopardy. So many people talk about getting Financial Backers but that isn’t always the best answer since they will often want the lion’s share of any rewards plus interest until the debt is paid back in full. Backers are also very impatient about repayment and don’t want to hear excuses as to why you had to pay your Rent before you pay them! When it comes to Bank loans, the Banks usually look at the Music Business as if it were smoke, something that you can see but cannot touch or hold in your hands.

They are very practical and cautious when it comes to giving out money for the Music Industry despite the incredible amount of money that is generated every year from it. Unless you have a lot of collateral to back such a loan, wait until you can show regular income from your initial endeavors first. Thinking big is fine, but starting out small and wisely is the best policy in putting together your own studio. The terms “Starving Artists” and “Starving Producers” come from the usual way of supplying your musical interests by means of a Day Job until you can wisely transition from one to the other. Almost everyone does it and there is no shame in admitting it. Only the most obnoxious of Industry Professional will criticize you for it.

The next subject to ponder is what you will use your home studio for. Is it for your own solo material, a Band, or are you planning to take on clients? Each situation can vary greatly depending upon the quality and workload you are seeking from your studio. As an example, I have worked, Managed, Recorded and Produced in 7 Recording Studios ranging from simple but effective equipment in a basement, all the way up to a current multi-million dollar Recording Facility here in Connecticut. Please note that as you move up in the degree of Studio you work in, your abilities, ears, and skills also need to improve dramatically! But the good thing is that if you start out small and determined to succeed, and keep an open mind to learning from others, you can eventually develop into whatever level you wish to as long as you can handle it. Recording Schools are invaluable for learning the Recording Industry, but they are not inexpensive, so you may wish to invest in books and videos about recording first. They can be purchased from many local Musical Instrument stores and national chains, including mail order.

Another option is to try to develop a relationship with someone experienced that can act as a Mentor, it can be invaluable to you and that person can help to further advance your career with their knowledge and influential assistance. The rule of thumb is that everyone in the business knows somebody else in the business at higher levels of power and success. But as with any Professional in any field of business, be respectful, honest, humble, tactful, and become an “invited guest” as opposed to a character that they will regret knowing! So after figuring out what level of experience you are at now and what you wish to use your studio for, it is time to start making a shopping list. If you are a beginner or even an experienced veteran, the best choices would be either a good home computer with lots of memory since there are many great programs that you can purchase along with the proper interface equipment, or purchase an all-in-one Recorder/Mixer/CD Burner unit. My suggestion is that when it comes to efficiency and cost effectiveness, the all-in-one units are outstanding and can create some wonderful results if you take your time to study and learn the functions, and then practice with them. The better ones are advisable and can range from approximately $800 to around $4000 to purchase. These units usually include extremely useful options and functions such as built in effects and editing programs, processors, mixers, and CD burners that can be very expensive if purchased separately. Since technology has improved so much over the years, these types of units can sound as if you recorded in a full blown recording studio. While they won’t replace a Professional Recording Studio with all of the bells and whistles, not to mention seriously sound-proofed recording rooms, you can purchase and own the all-in-one units for much less than the cost of recording a full CD of songs in a major studio.

To give you an example of this, while I often work in a big studio, I have my own Roland all-in-one unit and record my own clients I Manage, Song write, and Produce music for on it. This way, I don’t have to worry about paying for recording time costs or high utility bills that go hand in hand with a big studio. I can take as much time as I wish or that my clients need without watching the clock and can still get the results I want without the added pressures. Since I do know what I am doing and have a lot of experience recording and Producing, I recorded my Country Artist “Miss Marie” Wuhrer’s first CD “Bad Reputation” on it and it received airplay in approximately 75% of the US and many Record Label inquiries to boot!!! So the all-in-one units can be quite cost effective while returning professional quality results, and they are also very portable if need be. Portability can be a major plus! The next issue on the list is to get some very good recording microphones and perhaps a few stage microphones for good measure. Consider a minimum of a vocal and an instrument microphone. The recording ones are Condenser microphones and they require phantom power to operate them, which is simply a low voltage power source from 9 to 18 volts. This can come from putting batteries in the microphone or is usually included in the all-in-one units as standard equipment power supplies. The stage microphones are called Dynamic microphones and just require connection to a preamp or mixer channel input. Never run phantom power on dynamic microphones or you could easily and quickly damage them or the power source itself. Remember, if you plug the microphone into the unit and it doesn’t work in any of the channels as is, then you probably have a condenser microphone and must press the “phantom power” button to turn on the phantom power unit so the microphone will operate. Most decent condenser microphones have a Led light that comes on to show when it is in operation.

Condenser microphones are extremely sensitive and can pick up stray noises in the room so be careful when they are on during recording as to not have a very noisy environment you are working in. While it is crucial to “clean” your recorded tracks one-by-one of any stray sounds such as breathing noises BEFORE you mix them into the final result, there are times when you can’t remove excessive noise and must accept it or do the track over. Keep it quiet around you and you will save yourself a lot of time and trouble. All microphones have sensitivity specs, and to avoid a lengthy explanation here and distortion when you are recording, look for a microphone that has a 40 decibel or higher rating for sensitivity. This way, if you have a loud singer you won’t overdrive the microphone easily and get distortion in the vocal tracks. Next, you have to determine where you are going to record, especially if it is in your home. Most studios are in the basement areas and require deadening of the room to make it quiet for recording. When using an all-in-one unit, you can do most of your recording directly into the mixer/recorder without worrying about the noise you or others are making, it is all very quiet. This is especially true when using a drum machine instead of an actual Drummer and live drums! Except for vocals and live drums, you can record a full song in a bedroom while your family members or roommates are in other rooms and they won’t even hear you doing it! If you do designate a specific area, your recording room should not get too hot or too cold, and dampness is not good for any electronic equipment so be careful. When going for the cheap but effective recording studio, you can put up heavy rugs on the walls or use other deadening material to quiet down the room accordingly. Whether you are making a formal recording studio or a simple one, always remember to use Non-flammable materials to deaden the room to avoid a potential disaster.

To continue with our list, I recommend getting good headphones for yourself and some spares for others to use, as well as a headphone amplifier that will run multiple sets of headphones. For the best results, you should use the same brand and model closed back headphones which are essential for recording with live microphones. Semi-open or open-backed headphones allow the sounds coming through to be picked up and fed back into the microphone and recorder. The more isolation the headphones offer the better. Last in the chain would be a pair of powered studio monitors for playback and mixing. The best ones have the Bass ports in the front so they can be used in any location if necessary. The ones with Bass ports in the rear require a reflex action off of a wall for sound quality and this may not be practical for a home studio. As with all of the equipment I mentioned, there are many good brands and models out there and the costs vary greatly. Be ringer, Samson, and Event make some great units for home studios, and the bigger the Bass speaker i.e.: 6 or 8 inches, the better the quality of the sound you’ll get in final mixing and playback. I don’t recommend getting subwoofers until you really know what you are doing and can get a great mix on regular speakers. If you cannot mix on regular speakers, then adding subwoofers won’t help the final product and usually makes it sound horrible. And if while you are mixing your final product the dogs in your neighborhood are howling and running for cover, then Turn down the volume and back off on the Bass and high treble frequencies. If you blow out your hearing, it is gone forever. For optional equipment in your arsenal, a fairly inexpensive boom box is a great tool to have after making a mix. When I finish a mix of a song, I usually make both a CD and a cassette copy of it and play it on a good stereo, a cheap boom box, and a car radio just to see if it sounds good and fairly consistent for quality. If it sounds good on all of them, then I know that I have a good mix for the final product. I also have a separate stand alone CD burner that I can use to make copies while I am using the all-in-one unit for other songs and projects, rather than tying up the unit’s built in CD Burner for making multiple copies other than a Master copy. They cost from $200 to $500 or more, but I find it invaluable for my needs.

Other than some patch cords, spare microphone cables, telescoping microphone stands, music stands, a good comfortable rolling chair, decorating your recording room to taste, and some blank CDs to put product on, you should be able to get some very good results with your projects at a reasonable cost with these recommendations. As your skills improve, you can always upgrade your equipment and studio to fit your needs and dreams. Think toward the future career you are seeking and not just for showing off! I’ve seen some very basic equipment outdo some much more expensive setups. The main goal is to concentrate on getting good results.

Besides, as you begin to make your fortune, you can hire professional studio designers and builders to create your dream Palace. And please don’t forget to cover yourself legally if you are a Studio for hire. Write down ALL recording dates and notes about what transpired during them rather than relying on memory or hear-say, keep track of expenses compared to profits, and write down on the receipt you give the client that the final product is what he or she asked for and accepted as complete and both you and the client need to initial it. This is extremely important for every situation, but especially when a client wants to keep bad musicianship or singing on a project that you would never have kept yourself even if you were tone deaf! Once that client takes the product from you and lets friends and family criticize it accordingly, You will be blamed for letting it get out of your door like that and not the client for wanting it that way and refusing your subtle hints to change it during the recording session such as uncontrollable laughter or vomiting. If that client later chooses to sue you to get his or her money back and it goes before a Judge or Jury with NO Music Industry experience or taste, your note on the signed, dated and initialed may be all that saves you from getting ripped off and having to pay back what you legitimately earned. Good luck to all of you and God Bless. Wayne I. Johnson-Wildcard Music Productions and Artist/Model Management-Waterbury, Connecticut

Exciting Audio Books Online

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Although I love my work, parts of my research and writing can be demanding. I am a natural nutritionist, specializing in preparing articles, e-books, and other written material that shows people, like you, on how to understand and use natural remedies.

Being able to make a career by writing was in many ways a dream come true, but it also has a downside to it. For every minute of pure joy on writing what I like, there are times when I need to relax, be entertained, or to learn new things about my business. During those times, I need something interesting to listen to.

Music can be relaxing, but sometimes I need something different. Sometimes what I really want is a good story. Often I like to listen to radio broadcasts, or to sit down to the Discovery Channel, but more often I just listen to audio books online.

I have always enjoyed a good book, and I discovered that by listen to audio books I have added a new dimension to my living.

When I listen to online audio books, it is like being read to and I don’t need to think too much. I have always loved stories, and like almost everyone I know, I learned a love of literature by being read to.

I used to rent audio books from the library, and they have a good selection but not always the latest, but I quickly exhausted the possibilities. I had listened to literally every book on tape that they had! That is when I decided to start to download audio books online. Some of them were available for free, but only a few of them. Then I found a service that would give me almost any book that I wanted for a reasonable monthly price. It was well worth it.

When I listen to audio books online, I become more productive, more efficient, and happier in my work. I also purchase audio books online that are downloadable and I can move them into my ipod, mp3 player, flash hard drive stick, CD, or just my computer.

I think the mp3 player is a revolution, since it allows you to download audio topics and you can turn your wasted time into learning time. The information that you can now find through audio books online is amazing.

Something about the audio books online is rejuvenating and exciting for me. When I download online fiction books, informational books, or educational books, I and listen to them in my spare time it relaxes me and at the end of the day I feel good about myself. . My wife has even commented on the change. Listen to audio books that I download online has added a new dimension in my living and learning.

How To Enjoy Downloadable AudioBooks

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Without a doubt, technology has made our lives easier and even more enjoyable. Now we could take pictures and browse and enjoy them without the use films. We can watch films with greater clarity through DVD players and high definition television sets.

Today, we could also enjoy music almost anywhere through our portable cod and mp3 players such as iPod, Creative Zen or Sony Play Station Portable. Indeed, we have a lot to be thankful for technology.

Recently, technology has given us another innovation that would definitely revolutionize our lives. This technology is downloadable audiobooks. Simply put, audio books are recorded readings of books. Usually the readings are made by humans, commonly actors. But recently, some audiobook companies have been producing materials read by a computer.

Audiobooks offer many advantages. For one it does not require the commitment that regular books command. With audio books, you could listen to your favorite author or motivational speaker while doing other chores thus making one a true multi-tasker. In this day and age, individuals, especially professional, have little or no time for leisure activities such as readings.

Now with audio books, they can afford to enjoy a good book without spending too much time. They are also environment friendly since it does not require paper which as everybody knows comes from trees.

This is why it comes to no surprise that these books have gained popularity over the years. Add to that the popularity of portable digital media players. Places to download audio material abound in the World Wide Web. There are audio bookstores, audio rental sites and even audio book clubs. Some authors even offer their works as free downloads on the Internet.

So if you are not yet into downloadable audiobooks then maybe it is time for you to take advantage of this wonderful technology. For those who already have below are some ideas on where to enjoy your them.

While lying in bed

Books are perfect for those days when you just want to laze around and lie in bed all day. And it is a greater mind stimulant than watching television. You could also use audio books to put you to sleep so it is perfect to turn on that mp3 player before going to bed.

While working out

Why not exercise you body and your mind at the same time? With downloadable audio books it is now possible to do both at the same time. The best type of audio books to listen to while working out is motivational. This type of audio can make you work harder on those sites and can give you more energy to last the whole workout.

During the morning commute

Instead of cursing the awful traffic during your morning commute why not just listen to the work of your favorite author or to some inspirational or religious material. You could probably save yourself the anger and frustration and stress that commuting or driving can sometimes bring.

While doing household chores

Doing household chores can be such a drag. But not if you’re listening to a nice thriller. With downloadable audio books you can keep you’re house neat and clean and enjoy your favorite book at the same time.
